The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Office of Inspector General (OIG) is an independent organization within the FTC established in 1989, pursuant to amendments to the Inspector General Act of 1978 (IG Act). The OIG’s mission is to prevent and detect fraud, waste, and abuse, as well as promote efficiency and effectiveness in FTC programs and operations. The OIG primarily accomplishes its mission by (1) performing audits and reviews of FTC programs and operations; (2) conducting investigations of employee misconduct and crimes against the FTC; and (3) keeping FTC leadership, Congress, and other stakeholders informed, through the OIG’s Semiannual Report to Congress and Top Management and Performance Challenges report.
